Abused kitten Optimus finds new home
Rescue kitten Optimus, who has lived a lifetime in his 20 weeks, was adopted Friday to a new home.
Mike Reaume was one of six residents who expressed interest in adopting Optimus after he was found with two dead cats abandoned in a duffel bag in an empty lot off Northwood Street in mid October. Optimus was severely malnourished and near death weighing a mere 1.3 pounds. Optimus, who was hypothermic, barely registered a heartbeat.
Staff of the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society slowly warmed his body and brought him back to ralph lauren health. Within a week the kitten was perky and playful. He now weighs more than three pounds.
“It was a heartbreaking tragedy,” Reaume said. “I couldn’t believe someone would do that.”
At the time when Optimus was found, Reaume was looking for another cat to keep his 4 year old feline Clare company.
“Every animal ne ralph lauren eds a good home,” Reaume said. “Optimus suffered something horrible and I wanted to give him a good life.”
Optimus’ happy, laid back demeanor has captured the heart of the folks who work at the humane society. Of the 20 cats Tammie Holubeshen has fostered, Optimus is the hardest to let go.
“Picking him up and seeing him near death really touched me,” said Holubeshen, a humane society animal control officer who responded to the call from a Union Gas employee who heard meowing from a duffel bag ditched in an empty lot.
“Rescue pets are the best,” she said. “(Optimus) knows he almost died and was saved. (Rescue pets) have been to hell and back,” and appreciate a good home. “When they get a good home, they are the best behaved.”
On Friday the humane society had 50 other cats at the shelter available for adoption.
“People need to value cats more,” said Melanie Coulter, executive director of the humane society. “(Optimus) is an example of cats being thrown away on a regular basis. There are lots of kittens out there who need homes.”
Despite the hoopla around Optimus, the number of abandoned cats taken in by the humane society has dropped by 1,000 this year compared to 2011 and euthanasia of cats has declined. Coulter credits the new spay and neuter clinic the organization opened recently for halting unwanted litters.
Optimus is one of se ralph lauren veral high profile animal abuse cases in the area over the past five years. Coulter said she doesn’t think Windsor is more barbaric nor has more animal abuse cases than other regions.
“Fifty years ago people beat dogs but people didn’t call the police,” she said. ralph lauren “Fifty years ago kittens were drowned in rivers.”
She said norms about animal cruelty have changed and more people are reporting abuse and neglect. Whoever hurt Optimus has not been found. Coulter said the humane society didn’t get any tips that helped the investigation.
